Automatic dosing systems are simply a system that automates the application of water treatments, additives and conditioners.

Types of automatic doser:

These include the original automatic doser and the newer SL and XT models.

The main differences are: the updated shape and refill containers. The original dosers used a soft ‘IV’ bag whereas the newer SL and XT models use a more rigid bottle. The SL is a comparative size to the original model with the XT model being larger.

The larger XT model allows for the use of a much larger bottle. The benefits being either treatment of a larger water body or longer intervals between changes. With the additional of a second pump unit (supplied separately) the XT can hold and supply two of the smaller SL bottles. The use of two different treatments makes the XT model a versatile upgrade.

All doser models can be easily set to match the size of your pond or feature.

Automatic dosing systems are a great piece of kit for optimising water quality, treating and preventing issues and reducing maintenance requirements.

Whats in the doser bag/bottle: treatments, additives & conditioners:

There are several treatments available which can include combinations of bacteria, enzymes, nutrients treatments and conditioners.

Beneficial bacteria strains including denitrifying bacteria to complete the nitrogen cycle by breaking down ammonia from fish waste and heterotrophic bacteria to digest organic waste, sludge and detritus.

Phosphate binders to reduce algal growth by limting free nutrient, detoxifiers to improve water quality,

Clarifiers and flocculants to clear the water column of suspended solids and treat cloudy water.

Treatments to stop foam and reduce odours.

Additives to stabilise water quality.

Targeting fish to improve health and reduce stress.

Intercompatibility of dosing refills:

The original automatic dosing system has been replaced by the newer SL and XT models. The treatment containers have also changed. The old doser refills were held in soft ‘IV’ bags whereas the newer ones are in more rigid bottles. The newer SL bottles are completely interchangeable with the original IV bags thanks to the small top cap. See images below.

Alternatives to automatic dosing systems – hand dosing

The same beneficial additives you can use in an automatic doser are also available in handy pump-top bottles. These can be dosed easily as a single pump treats a known volume of water. If you are dosing regularly, it is a good chance to check on your pond health, fish and plants, and see if any other maintenance tasks are required.
